Run Google© Ads Against a Shopify© Collection

Google Advertising a Shopify Collection

There is one trick you need to know if you want to run Google© Ads against a Shopify© Collection.

WHAT IS A SHOPIFY COLLECTION?

InFacebook© advertising you need a Page (Click here for a tutorial on creating that page) that focuses on a niche. Inside a general Shopify Store we can also group items by the niche they belong to,

One of the nice features in Shopify Stores is called a Collection. You and use it to group a number of items you are selling into their own page.

Here is and example

Shopify lets you set up rules to identify the members of a collection. The collection has its own URL and you can send viewers to the collection. You can also include the collection names in the your Shopify Store menu. Unfortunately you can’t duplicate these rules when you try to limit which items you want to advertise in a Google Campaign. You also can’t use a Shopify tag to identify items in a Google Ad Campaign.

USING CUSTOM LABELS TO RUN GOOGLE ADS AGAINST A SHOPIFY COLLECTION

There is a feature in Google Advertising you can use and these are called Custom Labels. The trick is to get each of the items in a collection identified with the same value in one of Googles five Custom Labels.

FILLING A CUSTOM LABEL WITH A VALUE SO YOU CAN RUN GOOGLE ADS AGAINST A SHO[IFY COLLECTION

You can go into your Shopify Store and edit Products.

#1 – Click on Products in the main Shopify Menu.
#2 – Click on ALL PRODUCTS
#3 – Click on Filter
#4 – Click on Select a filter
#5 – Click on COLLECTIONS

Now you can select the Collection you want.

Click on the small box that adds a check mark to all the products.

Once you do, some options appear, including: EDIT PRODUCTS and ACTIONS.

#1 – The check box
#2 – EDIT PRODUCTS
33 – ACTIONS

If we click the EDIT PRODUCTS Button the Bulk Editor opens. However, the Custom Labels aren’t there and they aren’t in the fields we can add.

HOW TO GET THE CUSTOM LABEL FIELDS INTO THE BULK EDITOR

This is the trick I mentioned earlier. This isn’t obvious at all. I am assuming you are using Google’s Free App to move your products to Google’s Merchant Account/

#1 – Click on the APPS Menu Option
#2 – Click on Google Shopping

#1 – Here you can also clock on the check box for one or all of the products
#2 – When you do the EDIT PRODUCTS Option appears.

The Ap’s version of the Bulk Editor appears.

The Custom Labels are here and we can edit them. The problem is that the FILTER Option is missing so we can’t restrict the edit to just the items in our collection.

THE TRICK TO BULK EDITING THE ITEMS IN OUR COLLECTION SO YOU CAN RUN GOOGLE ADS AGAINST A SHOPIFY COLLECTION

If you go back to the Bulk Editor under Products, the new fields are now available.

You can add one or more of the CUSTOM LABEL Fields in to the Edit Screen

Now One o the columns is the fields we want.

#1 – Click on the Top one,
#2 – This is one of the empty fields
#3 – Note that if some of the items you are selling have lots of variations you may need to watch the adjacent column to see when a new editable field appears. It can be several Page-downs away.
#3 – Shift Click on the bottom one and enter the value you want to use to identify your collection. I used Momma-Collection

You may have to do this several time since the bulk editor has a limit on how many items it will edit at one time.

Click the SAVE Button to save you changes before you move to the next page.

USING A CUSTOM LABEL TO RUN GOOGLE ADS AGAINST A SHOPIFY COLLECTION DURING GOOGLE AD CREATION

You can create a SEARCH CAMPAIGN or a Goggle SHOPPING CAMPAIGN using the Value in the Custom Label.

Here is a sample

#1 – Choose to sub-divide by Custom Label
#2 – Choose your value
#3 – Google tells you how many products are in the collection (Note: as always every variation counts as a separate item.)

Don;t forget to turn the “Everything Else” CATEGORY OFF

That;s it. Now you can run Google Ads against a Shopify Collection.

Have a Great Day! Oh Hale Yes!
